The evening includes a presentation by Engledow about how an American sea captain’s evil deeds helped to establish the royal Kamehameha Dynasty. There will be Hawaiian music and light refreshments. Jill Engledow is an award-winning journalist and author who has lived on Maui since 1968. A freelance writer living in Wailuku, Jill’s work combines her knowledge of Hawai’i history and culture with her journalist’s instinct for a good story. Her most recent books are Island Life 101: A Newcomer’s Guide to Hawai’i, based on a seminar she developed to help newcomers adjust to life in Hawai’i, and The Maui Book of Lavender. Her next book, to be published in November 2012, is Haleakala: A History of the Maui Mountain, the first-ever comprehensive, illustrated history of the East Maui mountain and its national park.
Located in the Maalaea Shops near the Maui Ocean Center, the Story of Hawaii Museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children under twelve years old, and includes a DVD about the mapping of Hawaii. Docent-led tours are $10 per person.
