A Chart of the Sandwich Islands, George Vancouver Joseph Baker 1792-1794
Drawn during the voyage commanded by Captain George Vancouver, Baker's chart is probably one of the most significant maps in Hawaiian history. Sent to Hawai'i and the Pacific Northwest specifically for conducting hydrographic surveys, Vancouver spent three winters in Hawaiian waters. His was the only expedition to completely circumnavigate all of the islands of the chain. Some of the errors found in this chart were corrected by subsequent mapmakers, but this remained the basic map of Hawai'i for nearly eighty years.
