Chart of the Sandwich Islands – Jean-Francois La Perouse 1786
During one of the most ambitious exploratory voyages ever attempted, Jean-Francois de Galaup Comte de La Perouse visited Hawai'i and oversaw the compilation of this chart. His extremely short stay (24 hours) however, precluded his hydrographer, Bernizet, from completing the charting of shorelines which were missed during Cook's voyage. La Perouse touched only at the island of Maui, consequently most of this map was taken from Roberts' chart of Hawai'i. Bernizet miscalculated the longitude east – west distance for the Big Island of Hawaii showing a much thinner version than Cook's chart.
